Bee Sting Symptoms Bees Arizona

Bee Sting Symptoms

When Bees Sting

Are bee stings dangerous? The sting is the same whether it's from a docile European Honey Bee or an Africanized Bee. It's the number of stings that can be the problem as the Africanized - also known as killer bees - will attack in large groups and delivery many stings to any living creature in their way. The sting will, of course, be quite painful and can cause some redness, swelling and be itchy at the location of the sting. Some folks may have a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis and may need immediate medical assistance. If a person shows signs of facial swelling, tightness in the chest and/or+ hives, you should call 911 right away as this can pose a real medical emergency. Bee sting first aid and allergy treatment is no joke and should be handled by a medical professional. Get more info about bee sting symptoms at mayoclinic.org. There are several Mayo Clinic locations in the valley including in Phoenix, Glendale, Chandler, Scottsdale, Tempe and Fountain Hills.

Bees And Honey

Bees produce honey for food and store it in honeycombs, which are made of a wax that the bees also produce. The honeycomb is used not only to store the honey, but also to store their larvae and pollen, so it's super important for the bee colony's survival. These structures are very well organized with cells that are

hexagonal in shape, of equal size and slightly tilted upwards. They are always aligned horizontally, not vertically. Some species of wasps build similar structures, but out of a paper type of material instead of a wax.

When bees set up shop inside of a wall void, attic, crawlspace etc. they build their honeycomb in these spaces, also. If left there for an extended period of time, there can be very large amounts of honeycomb and honey. This can cause all sorts of structural damage, especially if it melts. Since it's the bees themselves that regulate the environment inside of their nests (temperature and humidity), the lack of bees will likely cause the honey to melt and that's where all sorts of problems can pop up. The melted honey can damage drywall, baseboards, framing, electrical components - just about anything that it settles on. And it may also draw other unwanted critters such as ants, rodents, roaches and other bees. That's why we offer honeycomb removal service - it is sometimes an extremely important step in the bee control process and we don't always know if you need honeycomb removal until we've finished eliminating the bees.

BEES & WASPS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BEES

How much does bee removal cost?

There are several factors that go into the cost of a professional bee control service in the Phoenix area. Where are the bees? How many are there? How hard is it to get to them? Does the honeycomb need to be removed from a void space? A bee removal job can be very simple: such as walking up to a tree limb with a plastic trash bag, putting the bag over the swarm or hive, cutting the branch, sealing the bag and relocating them. Or it can be extremely difficult: such as cutting into a roof in a bee suit 30 feet up in 120 degree weather and finding a hive of 20,000 or more Africanized bees. So, as you can see, the cost will vary by an awful lot, as well.

That said, if someone is quoting you a ridiculously low price (under $100) we recommend calling around. Especially if they can't guarantee a ceiling on that price. Most normal, average bee removal jobs should run close to $200 and will go up from there depending on the circumstances. Certainly you want to check out any company by typing their name into a Google search bar before hiring them. A price that's too good to be true probably is and if you had to hire a 2nd company to finish the job you didn't save a cent.

What time of year do bees swarm?

Late spring and early summer are what we consider to be the normal bee swarming season. However, we've seen swarms all the way up to the end of fall. A lot of it depends on the weather, the amount of water that has been available and how successful any given bee colony has been that year.

When they do swarm, there will be several hundred to several thousand worker bees along with a handful of drones and a single queen. As they travel, looking for a suitable place to set up shop, the queen may tire and stop almost anywhere for a rest. When she does that all of the other bees clump up on and around her to protect her until she's ready to move on.

Do bees die in the winter?

Not if they've had a successful season and have produced enough bees, pollen and especially honey. They remain active throughout the winter, creating their own heat which is needed for the colony to survive.

What should I do if I disturb a bees nest?

Hopefully you're not messing with the bees or trying to remove or control them on your own......

If you do happen to disturb a bees nest by accident, really you should just run away as fast as you can. Run until the bees have lost interest in you, which may be a quarter of a mile or more from the nest. Of course, be aware of where you're running and be safe, but just get away from the bees as fast as possible. Bees can fly to speeds of 15 miles per hour, but most healthy humans are able to outrun them.

How long do bee swarms stay?

When bees swarm, the queen may need to stop for a rest from time to time. Their goal is simply to find a suitable place to nest and sometimes that may be difficult to find. When she does stop, the other bees in her entourage will surround her to protect her. So if you come home to a big clump of bees, that's likely what's happening.

Bee hive will usually move on within an hour, but sometimes stay as long as a few day. The longer they are there the more likely they plan on staying. We recommend giving it at least a day before calling out a professional bee removal service. The exceptions to this rule would be if anyone nearby is allergic to bees or if they present a danger to people or pets. If one of those conditions exist get a bee control pro out right away.

Will bees nest damage my house?

If you're dealing with honey bees, the actual bees do not cause any structural damages. However, if they've been there long enough to have built up a decent sized honeycomb and you bees are exterminated or removed, the honey absolutely can cause damage. Anything bigger than a football should probably be removed and sometimes it's hard to tell just how big the honeycomb may be.

Since the bees regulate the temperature and humidity within the nest with the flapping of their wings, the absence of bees means that the honey will melt once it gets warm. The melted honey can damage drywall, electrical components and more.

Should you jump in water if attacked by bees?

No! The bees can hover above the water longer than you can hold your breath, so they'll get you eventually. Also - do not swat at the bees. They don't like rapid movements and if you squash one it will release a pheromone that makes the other bees even madder. Just run.
